Teeth whitening: we distinguish useful tips from dangerous

Some of them are strictly not recommended!

Recently, teeth whitening is rapidly gaining popularity at home. It's enough to go to Pinterest to find a lot of tips on this topic. But are they really useful? Kevin Sands, an experienced dentist, author of snow-white smiles of many American celebrities, commented on some of the most popular advice.

1. Rub the teeth with the inside of the banana skin for two minutes.

In the worst case, you will not see any result, but just look like a monkey with a banana skin. Banana contains potassium, magnesium and manganese, which when exposed to teeth can theoretically have a whitening effect. But during the experiment, the result was unsatisfactory. The whitening effect was almost invisible.

2. Mix 3 teaspoons of soda with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. Rub in the teeth with a cotton swab. In half a minute rinse and brush with a brush.

It can be very dangerous. Baking soda is an abrasive, and lemon juice is a strong acid. A mixture of these substances destroys the enamel.

3. Pour hydrogen peroxide into the cap and add soda, every day for 20 minutes for two weeks.

Peroxide of hydrogen in itself has a weak bleaching effect. In combination with soda, the substance will not be too abrasive, so you can try. However, do not expect such a result, as from professional bleaching.

4. Add a small amount of water to the baking soda to make a thick mixture, and apply for 10 minutes.

This makes no sense. If you rub the soda in your teeth, it acts abrasively and destroys the enamel, but if applied, without rubbing it, it will not destroy anything, but it will not have any whitening effect.

5. Rinse with cinnamon, honey and lemon.

Although a mixture of cinnamon, honey and lemon can be tasty, do not use it for daily rinsing of the mouth. Lemon juice contains a large amount of acid and can damage the enamel, while a high sugar content in honey at constant exposure can also cause tooth decay.

6. Self-made toothpaste from coconut oil and baking soda.

According to this recipe, you need to mix coconut oil, soda and essential oils. When cleaning teeth with a mixture containing baking soda, it has an extremely abrasive effect, quickly destroying the enamel. In addition, in such a paste there are no ingredients containing fluoride, which is the main element for maintaining the health of your teeth.

From all of the above, you can draw one conclusion: if the recipe seems too good or too incredible, then, most likely, it is. If in doubt, consult a dentist for advice.
