Lapidarium


In Prague there are several amazing museums , carefully storing the memory of the past of the city. Among them is Lapidarium, otherwise known as the Museum of Stone Sculptures. Its luxurious and richly decorated rooms with a huge collection of exhibits from different eras will not leave anyone indifferent. Lapidarium is an ideal place for family leisure in Prague.

Lapidarium is located in the administrative district of Prague 7, on the territory of the Prague Exhibition Center in the Holesovice district.

History

The name of the museum comes from the Latin word lapidarium and translates as "carved into stone." Lapidarium is part of the National Museum , built in 1818. At first it was a place where stone figures, sculptures, fragments of cathedrals of the city and other archaeological values ​​were brought to save them from flooding. In 1905, Lapidarium became a museum and was open to visitors, and in 1995 entered the Top 10 of the most beautiful European exhibitions.

What interesting things can you see in Lapidarium?

The museum houses one of the largest collections in Europe, including more than 2 thousand exhibits of Czech sculptors of the 11th-20th centuries, including Frantisek Xavier Leder, František Maximilian Brokoff and others. Here, too, are the original sculptures from the Charles Bridge , the statues of Vyšehrad , Old Town Square and many others. other

From the entire collection of 400 exhibits you can see with your own eyes, the rest is placed in separate storages. The unique and diverse collection of the museum is located in 8 exhibition halls and is grouped by epoch, from the early Middle Ages and to the period of romanticism.

The best stone sculptures, columns, fragments, portals, fountains, etc. make the exhibition of Lapidarium an incredibly beautiful and very popular. It is no coincidence that the cultural heritage of the museum is protected by the state.

Lapidarium Halls

At the beginning of the tour, visitors will be shown the scheme of mining and processing of rocks, as well as ways of restoration of artifacts made of stone. Then the guests of the museum will be led through the halls and will tell about the most remarkable exhibits. Let us briefly consider what can be seen here:

  1. Hall number 1 of Lapidarium. It is dedicated to gothic. The most interesting in this room is the column from St. Vitus Cathedral , the tomb of the royal daughter of Wenceslas II and the lions brought here from the Prague Castle and dating from the beginning of the 13th century.
  2. Hall number 2 - is the embodiment of the royal atmosphere, the center of the sculptures of the royal family and stone sculptures of the patron saints of the Czech people (St. Vitus, Sigismund and Adalbert).
  3. Hall number 3 - everything is permeated with the spirit of the Renaissance, including the model of the old Krotzin Fountain of 1596 with the part of it that was preserved from it, located earlier in the Old Town Square.
  4. Hall number 4. In this room, it is worth paying attention to the Bear Gate or the Slavata portal, as well as to the statues taken from the Charles Bridge.
  5. Halls №№ 5-8. In the remaining rooms of Lapidarium there are the remains of the Marian Column, which was also on the Old Town Square and later destroyed by an enraged crowd of people, as well as statues of Emperor Franz Joseph and Marshal Radetsky, cast from bronze.

Features of visit

Lapidarium in Prague takes guests only in the warm season - from May to October. On Mondays and Tuesdays it does not work, on Wednesdays it is open from 10:00 to 16:00 hours, and from Thursday to Sunday - from 12:00 to 18:00.

Admission ticket for adults costs 50 CZK ($ 2,3). For children from 6 to 15 years old, students, pensioners over 60 years and disabled are provided with preferential tickets worth 30 EEK ($ 1.4). Children up to 6 years old admission free. If you plan to visit the museum with the whole family, you can save by buying a family ticket for 80 kronor ($ 3.7), which can take a maximum of 2 adults and 3 children.

Photo and video shooting in the halls of the museum is paid separately (30 CZK or $ 1.4).

For convenient movement and demonstration of giant exhibits, the museum building is arranged in such a way that it does not have stairs, steps, thresholds. So, everyone who wishes, including people with disabilities, will be able to visit Lapidarium.

It is most convenient to take the tram lines Nos. 5, 12, 17, 24, 53, 54 and go to the stop Vystaviste Holesovice or take the metro along the line C to the Nadrazi Holesovice station.
