The town hall is the embodiment of prosperity and protection, a symbol of many European cities, and the Zurich town hall is no exception. The building is considered one of the main cultural and architectural attractions of Swiss Zurich .

Some facts about the town hall

  1. The Town Hall building was built in the late 17th century, it is located in the part of the city, called the Old Town on the banks of the Limmat River, near the Grossmunster Cathedral .

The building of the town hall seems to be "standing on the water", but all because the foundation of the structure is the huge piles fixed in the Limmat River.

The Town Hall is a three-storey baroque building, perfectly preserved from the time of its foundation. The walls of the building are made of ashlar stone, the motifs of the old Renaissance are easy to read in the facade. The entrance doors look very impressive, and the whole building is decorated with numerous reliefs and arcades. The interior of the Town Hall of Zurich is also famous for its decoration. The decoration uses a lot of stucco, large crystal chandeliers, painted ceilings decorate the halls, and in one of the rooms there is even a ceramic stove. Summing up, one can say that the Town Hall looks more like a palace than a typical one administrative building.

How to get there and visit?

You can get to Zurich Town Hall by tram numbers 15, 4, 10, 6 and 7, or by buses 31 and 46, or by foot (the road from the railway station takes approximately 10 minutes). The Town Hall is open daily from 9.00 to 19.00, except for weekends. In order to save money, we recommend that you buy a ticket for all public transport; the validity of the ticket is 24 hours.
