The majestic building of the castle of Kiburg, towering above the surroundings, stands on a hill above the river Toss. The castle building, perfectly preserved both inside and outside, is by far one of the popular attractions of the canton of Zurich.

History of the Castle of Kiburg

Initially, the castle belonged to the influential medieval feudal lords of Switzerland - the counts of the Kiburgs. When the last representative of this family died, the castle, together with other possessions of the Kiburgs, passed to Rudolf I of Habsburg, thus becoming a part of the Austrian monarchy. Returned to Switzerland, the castle in the XV century, when the county of Kiburg bought from the Habsburg free city of Zurich . Until 1831, the building was used as a residence of the governor, and then Kiborg was auctioned, and its new private owners opened a museum and an exhibition center in it. And in 1917 the canton of Zurich again bought the castle. Today, Kiburg is the national heritage of Switzerland , there is the public museum "Castle of Kiburg".

How to get to Kiburg?

The castle of Kiburg is located in the north-eastern part of Switzerland , 8 km south of the city of Winterthur in the canton of Zurich. Between Kiberg and Winterthur there are regular buses that will quickly take you to your destination.

The castle is open to visitors from 10:30 to 17:30 (in summer) and to 16:30 (in winter). The day off is Monday. Christmas and New Year holidays are also considered days off. The cost of visiting the attractions is 3 Swiss francs for children under 16 years of age and 8 francs for adults.
