Monastery of Rustovo

The Monastery of Rustovo is a functioning convent in Montenegro , in the municipality of Budva . It is located near the Praskvica Monastery , in the mountains near the village of Chelobrdo.

General information

Rustovo - the monastery is new: it was consecrated only in 2003. However, the events in honor of which he was erected, are rooted in the deep antiquity: it is a kind of monument to 1,400 pashtroviks who died for the Christian faith in 1381. After some time, a church was erected on the site of their burial, later a small monastery grew up around it. Then, like many other monasteries in Montenegro, it was repeatedly looted, destroyed, and still badly damaged by the 1979 earthquake.

At the beginning of this century the monastery was restored and again began to operate. Today it has 8 nuns. Rustovo is famous for its icons of the Iberian Mother of God, "Fragrant Color" and others.

Architectural appearance

The most ancient temple on the territory of the monastery is the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin. It was erected in the XIV century, badly damaged by the earthquake in 1667, but in 1683 it was restored. Then, during the earthquake in 1979, it was again severely damaged, and again restored. Today, around it, you can see the foundation of an ancient temple. Near the church there is an old cemetery.

On the territory of the monastery there is a cell building and a guest room. When clearing the territory for their construction, the bones of the martyrs who died for their faith in the 14th century were found. Some of them were buried in the monastery of St. George on Mertvitsa, part - rest in the altar of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin.

These remains were then laid in the foundation of another church, built in honor of the Holy Martyrs of the Romanov family of the last Russian emperor. The temple was laid in August 2005, and was consecrated on July 17, 2006.

There is another temple on the monastery territory - in honor of Saint Benedict of Nursia, a saint who is equally revered by both Orthodox and Catholics. It was located in the cell building. All the temples and cells are in the same style, typical of the architecture of Sveti Stefan .
