History and architectural features

The clock tower in Tirana was built in 1822 under the leadership of Albanian architect of the time Hadji Ephem Bay. Initially, according to his design, the tower was given the role of a viewing platform in order to inform the local population in time about the approaching danger, so the construction was not too high. Many years later, only in 1928, the local people reconstructed the main architectural structure of Tirana. Thanks to the perseverance and efforts of the Albanians, the clock tower was expanded and its height reached 35 meters. For a long time the tower towered over all the other buildings in the city.

Originally on the clock tower was installed a bell, brought from Venice, which celebrated every new hour with its ringing. However, after the restoration, the municipality of Tirana, instead of the bell, installed German watches made on special orders, which still show the exact time. Inside the tower, a new high staircase was built, which totaled 90 steps.

Tourists, vacationers in the capital of Albania , often create a stir around this unique structure. A fascinating and at the same time a mysterious sight the clock tower acquires at night, when its glow is visible even from the farthest outskirts of the city. At night, curious travelers often arrange small photo sessions near the walls of the tower.
