Monastery of Tvrdos

Monastery Tvrdos - one of the most important and revered monasteries of the Serbian Orthodox Church. It was in this monastery that the holy Vasily Ostrozhsky, a Serbian saint, at the ark, with the relics of which many pilgrims are still looking for healing, took monastic vows. And it is in this monastery that the icon in gold frame and with diamonds is kept - the most expensive in Bosnia and Herzegovina .

History

The monastery of Tvrdos is built on the foundation of a tiny church of the 4th century, created in the era of Constantine the Great and his mother Helena of Anjou, whose foundation you can see through the glass floor in one of the halls. In the late 13th - early 14th centuries, with the participation of one of the best artists in the frescoes in Dubrovnik Vicko Lovrova, the building acquired frescoes (the remains of which were then found by archaeologists). Since that time and for more than two hundred years in the monastery metropolitans of Herzegovina began to live.

Throughout its centuries-old history, the monastery of Tvrdos has been destroyed several times and rebuilt. For example, during clashes between Turks and Venetians in 1694 the monastery was completely devastated by Venetians, and it was used as a fortress. But at the same time managed to save some of the relics - they were transported to the monastery Savina in Montenegro. In the early 18th century, attempts were made to restore the monastery. The monastery acquired its modern form in 1924 with the participation of one of the saints of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Vasily Ostrozhsky, who spent part of his monastic life in Tvrdos.
