A bit of history

In the distant nineteenth century, or rather, at its very beginning, the convent of the Franciscans stood in the place of the Town Hall, and the city hall was in the Palace of the Grand Dukes . During the French occupation, the Town Hall became the administration of the Department of Forte.

In 1820, the monastery of the Franciscans was already destroyed and did not bring any benefit, so it was decided to demolish the building and instead build a city mayor's office. In 1828 an unknown architect created the best project for the building and construction began according to his drawings. In 1830 the Town Hall in Luxembourg was already ready. When the construction was almost completed, the Belgian conflict broke out in the country. Luxembourg lost a large number of its territories, and Belgium became an independent state, but this only affected the opening time of the Town Hall. The building itself remained untouched.

For the first time the city council was assembled in the walls of the new Town Hall in 1838, the official opening was only a little later: in the summer of 1844, the Dutch King and Grand Duke of Luxembourg Willem II attended the grand opening of the city hall. In 1848 in the Town Hall was held a landmark meeting of the founders of Luxembourg. It lasted a long time and, after all, after five hours of sitting, a new constitution of the state was adopted here.

For two centuries, the Town Hall has not changed much, the only addition was the two bronze lions installed at the entrance to the building in 1938. Lions are made by sculptor Auguste Tremont.
