Cathedral of Our Lady of Luxembourg

In the eponymous capital of Luxembourg , in its southern part, flaunts the monument of classical medieval architecture - the Cathedral of the Luxembourg Our Lady, a kind of local Notre Dame.

History of the Cathedral

The Jesuits built it at the beginning of the 17th century for his Orderen sketches by the architect J. du Bloc. After 150 years in 1773 all the Jesuits were expelled from the country, the confiscated church was renamed in honor of St. Nicholas and fulfilled the mission of the parish church. Later it was renamed again, and it became the church of St. Theresa.

And only when Pope Pius IX in 1870 solemnly consecrated the cathedral, he became known as the Cathedral of the Luxembourg Our Lady. At the same time, they placed the image of the Virgin comforting in it.

From 1935 to 1939, the cathedral conducted some reconstruction and restoration work.

What to see?

Architecturally, it is interesting because it bears the signs of different styles and eras: strict Gothic closely intertwines with the features of the Renaissance. The Cathedral of Our Lady of Luxembourg is decorated with interesting elements of architecture: rich choruses, beautiful sculptures and majestic crypt-tombs of Moorish style, stained-glass windows of biblical scenes and beautifully painted central nave.

Cathedral of the 21st century

Nowadays the cathedral serves its purpose, but first of all it is a holy place for the pilgrimage of Roman Catholics, who seek support from the image of Our Lady - the Comforter of all the Afflicted. And every fifth resurrection after the Holy Pascha is carried through the city, as in the Middle Ages, along the same route.

The cathedral houses the tomb of all rulers of Luxembourg, guarded by two formidable bronze lions, and also contains the sarcophagus of the King of Bohemia and the Count of Luxembourg John Blind.

Most tourists prefer to travel around Luxembourg by car or by bicycle - the favorite transport of local residents. Not far from the cathedral is the Guillaume II Square , surrounded by the best hotels in the country.

The entrance is free.
