The Engelberg Monastery


The Engelberg Monastery was founded in 1120 on the initiative of the Earl of Kondrat Söllenbüren and is located in one of the most beautiful places in Switzerland - at the foot of Mount Titlis . Since 1604, the Engelberg Monastery was accepted into the Swiss congregation of Benedictines, it was at their initiative in the 19th century that an educational school was opened at the monastery, which eventually expanded, and now it includes a gymnasium, folk classes, boarding school for children.

What to see?

There is also a library on the territory of the monastery, the foundation date of which is the 12th century. The library of the monastery collected a magnificent collection of old books, manuscripts and first printed books. In addition, at the monastery Engelberg operates a permanent exhibition that demonstrates the spiritual and cultural values ​​of the Benedictine Order. The most significant exhibits of this exhibition are the regalia of King Otto, ancient manuscripts and books, as well as the Alpnach crucifix of the 12th century.

How to get there?

From Zurich to Engelberg, you can go by train with a transfer in Lucerne : the train Zurich-Lucerne leaves twice per hour, in Lucerne you need to change the train to Engelberg. From Geneva, you get on the same scheme, from the station to the monastery you can walk or take a taxi.

The time of visiting the monastery is limited, special tours are organized for visiting the monastery (from Wednesday to Saturday at 10.00 and 16.00), the cost of the tour is 8 SFR, for children the entrance is free.
