Interesting Facts

Björnlandet National Park (Björnlandet) is located in the Swedish taiga near the town of Fredrik, municipality of Osele. The reserve was established in 1991 with the aim of preserving the largest pine forest in Sweden. Due to the peculiarities of the location at the foot of the Scandinavian mountains, the park is protected from severe winds and heavy rainfall, so the climate in this region is temperate - with a fairly cold winter and warm summer.

It is curious that throughout the national park no human traces have been found, which indicates that Bjørnlandet has been preserved to this day almost in its original form.

Flora and fauna of the park

Of particular interest to all tourists is the flora and fauna of the Björnlandet Reserve. The whole zone of the park is taiga and consists mainly of pine and spruce trees. Due to the fact that the pine has a thicker layer of bark, this coniferous plant is less prone to fires and it can be found most often in forest depths. Spruces and in the northern part of the reserve are more common spruce. On the territory of Björnlandet there are also a huge number of other trees and various shrubs, including alder, birch, fern, blueberry, majnik, etc.

In turn, the main representative of the fauna of the reserve is an ordinary beaver, you can rarely see in the forests of elk, whitefish and yellowness. In addition, the territory of the park has become a haven for hundreds of species of birds, among which the most common are wood grouse, golden eagle, rump, chaffinch, forest shevritsa and yurok. A pleasant surprise for ornithologists and ordinary inhabitants will be the opportunity to study woodpeckers, without leaving Björnlandet, because in this region there are about 5 different species of this family.

The best time to travel

Each of the seasons in Bjørlandandet has its advantages:

  1. Winter is a great time to visit the national park. Despite the short duration of the day, many tourists like to come to the reserve exactly in this season, when the moonlight can be so bright that you can ski without additional lighting and make stunning photos of snow-covered forests at dawn.
  2. Spring is a period when all life springs up, and trees acquire a rich green tint. At this time of year it is best to observe the mammals, but do not forget about the spring thaw, when the passage to the park can be closed.
  3. Summer is a favorite time for ornithologists. The best places to observe the birds are near Lake Angsjön and along the streams of Ansjöbäcken and Björkbäcken. At the end of summer begins the berry season.
