Põltsamaa Castle

History of Põltsamaa Castle

The castle at the river was built in the Estonian city of Põltsamaa in 1272. In the 16th century, Põltsamaa was the capital of the Livonian Kingdom and bore the name Oberpalen. At this time, Põltsamaa Castle served as the residence of the Duke of Magnus.

In the XVIII century. He was rebuilt in the magnificent palace by Woldemar Johann von Lauw. During the Second World War, the castle burned down, and now little is left of it - only the walls were preserved.

Now in the castle Põltsamaa there is a museum, expositions of which tell about the history of the city. In the courtyard of the castle there are craft workshops, various outdoor events.
