Dragon Caves

Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands . The "core" of the island consists of two mountain ranges, parallel to each other. The main material from which these ridges formed is limestone - the material is known to be soft. Due to the millennial impact of erosion, many karst caves have formed, which have become the most famous sights of the island.

The largest and most popular are the Cave of the Dragon, or, in Catalan, Cuevas del Drach. They are located near Manacor, in the town of Porto Cristo.

Best Cave

Cuevas del Drach is not in vain the title of "the best cave in Mallorca": just look at the photo to see this, and after visiting it you will have no doubt about it.

In fact, the cave of the dragon is not a single cave, but a whole complex of them - White, Black, and the cave of Luis Salvador. Here are six underground lakes - Lake Martel, Delisias, Negro and 3 smaller lakes. On the Martel Lake, classical music concerts are held periodically, and the musicians are in special boats sailing along the lake, and the spectators are located in the French grotto. The musical performance is accompanied by a light that mimics the dawn: a weak light that appears to appear in the depths of the earth's crust and gradually fills the entire space.

Grottoes, labyrinths, all lakes are constantly illuminated - you can enjoy the opening view with a bizarre picture to the fullest.

A bit of history

The dragon's caves in Mallorca are not only some of their most beautiful, but, perhaps, the most mysterious; they are associated with many legends. Including the legend of the dragon, which guards the entrance to these caves and ... a legend about how the legend about the dragon arose. For example, some attribute the authorship of the legend of the fire-breathing monster ... to the Templars, who hid their treasure in the drach caves, and tried to scare stories of the dragon from the caves of the locals. However, the "terrible story" did not help much: in 1338 the governor of the island sent in search of a "treasure trove" of soldiers, which is recorded accordingly (this is the first written mention of the dragon caves in Mallorca). At the same time, the first maps of the caves were also compiled. And thoroughly the caves of the fights Mallorca were already in 1886 by the French cave explorer Eduard Martel with the financial support of Archduke of Austria Luis Salvador. By the way, one of the underground lakes is named in honor of the discoverer by Martel Lake. This is one of the world's largest underground lakes.
