Monastery Luke and the legend of his creation

The most important pilgrimage center in Mallorca is the monastery of Luke (Lluc), located among the Serra de Tramuntana mountains. It was founded in the thirteenth century.

Legend has it that the shepherd Luke, strolling through the woods around the old pagan temple, found a small statue of Mary in black. He took the figurine to a village church and gave it to the priest. The statuette disappeared and mysteriously returned to the place where Luke found it. After that, it was decided to build a church in this place and a monastery.

So in the place of the former pagan worship was founded the monastery Nostra Senyora de Lluc. It was the goal of many pilgrims, since the thirteenth century. The chapel and the church, the old monastery, the small museum and the gallery are part of a huge complex.

Besides the obvious religious value, this landmark is highly valued for its picturesque qualities. Many climbers and lovers of mountain trekking come to the monastery to start from there their trips and hikes along various mountain routes. This place is definitely worth recommending for a visit, both in summer and in the off-season.
