History of the museum

The City Art Gallery, which opened on June 22, 1956, received the name of King George VI. Issues related to the management of the gallery and finances were transferred to the competence of the supervisory body - the Board of Trustees.

In 2001, the city of Port Elizabeth joined the newly formed territorial entity - the urban district of Nelson Mandela Bay. The Board of Trustees after the meetings with the municipality of the district decided to rename the gallery in the Art Museum of Nelson Mandela. The name in honor of the hero of the African liberation movement corresponds to the spirit of the times and allows the museum to represent the city at a high national level.
