Savin's Monastery


The territory occupied by modern Montenegro has been inhabited since ancient times. It is not surprising that up to now, the most interesting objects from the historical point of view remain intact. One of such amazing creations is the male Orthodox monastery Savina.

The oldest building in Montenegro

The first mention of Savinovsky monastery refers to 1030. According to the chronicles, it was founded by monks who fled from the city of Trebinje. Savin Monastery is located in the area of Herceg Novi . The name of the monastery is associated with the name of the first Serbian archbishop - Saint Sava.

The monastic complex includes the Small Assumption Church, the Great Assumption Church, the Church of St. Savva, the cell building, two cemeteries. All buildings are buried in the greenery of pine forests and are surrounded by ancient burials.

Sample Baroque

The Great Assumption Church is made in the baroque style. Its construction began in the XVII century. For this, expensive stones were brought from the territory of present-day Croatia. The main values ​​of the cathedral is the iconostasis, whose height reaches 15 m, a huge chandelier cast from gold, and a miraculous icon of the Mother of God of Savvin.

The oldest of buildings

The oldest building is the Little Assumption Church, erected in 1030. It is famous for its frescoes dating back to the 15th century. Ancient images are dedicated to the biblical legends and the worldly path of the Savior.

The Creation of St Sava

There are legends in which it is said that the Church of Savva was built by the saints themselves approximately in the 13th century, and half a century later it was destroyed. However, in the XV century. the temple was rebuilt. Nowadays, near it is an observation deck, giving views of the Boka Bay of Kotor and the Great Assumption Church.

Values ​​of the monastery

Monastery of Savin in Montenegro keeps a lot of religious values. For example, with him, a library was organized, with exhibits of 5,000 books. The most valuable examples include the Gospel of 1375, the Russian alphabet of 1820, manuscript books of the Middle Ages. In addition, the icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker (XVIII century), the cross of St. Sava (XIII century), church utensils from the monasteries of Serbia are considered to be priceless.

How to get there?

From the central part of the city to the attractions it is more convenient to walk. Go on the road along the street Negosheva, leading to the Old Town. After crossing with the street Save Kovačevića go east to Braće Gracalić. The signs will bring you to the monastery. A walk will take no more than half an hour. If there is no time, use taxi services.
