Verdunberg Castle

In the picturesque Rhine Valley, not far from Bux, the town of the canton of St. Gallen , there is a very curious medieval attraction - the castle of Verdenburg. The name translates as "arisen mountain", since the castle was erected on the very top of the hill in the homonymous settlement. In the past, Verdenburg had the status of a city, but today it is only an urban-type settlement with cute dwelling wooden houses.

For many years, nobody lives in the castle, which served as motivation for making a decision to open a local history museum within its walls. For an inquisitive tourist visiting the castle is a great opportunity to get acquainted with local history and culture, and also just have a good time enjoying the unique architecture and, so to speak, the general mood of the place.

Features

Over the long years of its existence, the castle had to be defeated and even completely destroyed, but its fate was changed in another way. Not only that he courageously withstood all the fires and destruction, so also perfectly preserved - naturally, not without the help of restoration work.

The researchers suggest that the structure was erected in the 13th century, but they doubt whether they were the founder: whether it was Count von Verdenberg Rudolf, or whether his father was Hugo I von Montfort. And it's not so important, after the death of Rudolph, the owners of the castle changed very often.

Architecture and interior

The castle is built in the form of a fortified structure: the tower and the main building are united. Most likely, this is due to the limited space on the hill. The tower is composed of roughly carved stones; has loopholes and wall prongs.

The facade of the building welcomes guests with the coat of arms of Verdenberg, which is a black church banner. In the northern part of the main tower-dungeon there is a dungeon. In the guardroom on the intermediate floor of the castle is a cantonal collection of weapons, which makes sense not just to look at, but to carefully consider.

The interior of the castle meets the traditions of the historical style. It is impossible not to notice an impressive number of paintings and portraits of the XVII-XIX centuries. They not only decorate the walls of the castle premises, but also play the role of museum exhibits. In the Knight's Hall, on the left side, the Gilti coat of arms is painted - this is a reminder of the owner of the castle from 1835 - Johanne Ulrich Gilti. Religious motives are present in the vestibule. the main picture, made in the style of the early Renaissance, was moved to the castle directly from the church. The picture dates back to 1539, which indicates its immense historical value.

Premises for gentlemen are decorated in the Baroque style - apparently, Johann Gilti tried in due time. However, the furnishings and furniture in these rooms belong to the XIX century. The upper floor, once a barn, was equipped under the museum of the Rhine. From it you can climb to the tower-dungeon, where there is a special room for small visitors. While parents walk peacefully around the castle, children can occupy themselves with games or drawing - thus, both old and mature, and the young traveler will be satisfied with the trip.
