Visconti Fortress


The town of Locarno is a popular tourist destination in Ticino, located on Lake Maggiore near the Swiss Alps . Locarno is often called the "city of the world", because It was here that the international peace treaty was signed in 1925. The city is famous for its parks, a chic recreation area by the lake, and in Locarno the famous Visconti castle has been preserved.

More about the fortress

As the name suggests, the Visconti fortress has Italian roots, indeed, in the Middle Ages the Milanese family settled here, immortalizing their name in this landmark, although until now the exact date of building the castle remains a matter of dispute: for example, some historians believe that the construction of the castle was it was completed in the 15th century, and even the great Leonardo da Vinci took part in its design, while others refer this castle to the 12th century. Over the years, the Visconti fortress in Locarno has been rebuilt and rebuilt many times, now we can observe only a fifth of the original buildings, but even the surviving version is an integral architectural ensemble.

In the fortress of Visconti, ancient interiors are preserved, and in the archaeological museum that is located here you can see valuable finds, some of which belong to the Bronze Age. The most valuable collection of the museum is the collection of antique glass, which indicates the residing of the territory of the Romans, did not deprive the attention of the Locarno Conference of 1925. Nowadays in the halls of the castle it is possible to arrange a celebration, it is enough just to rent the necessary hall. And in the labyrinths of the castle is a small theater Locarno.

How to get there and when to visit?

The doors of the castle and Visconti museum in Switzerland are open for visitors from Tuesday to Sunday from 10.00 to 17.00 hours with a break from 12.00 to 14.00, the cost of the visit is 7 CHF for adults and 5 CHF for children. The Visconti Fortress can be reached by buses 1, 2, 7, 311, 314, 315, 316 and 324 to the Piazza Castello stop.
