Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Tromsø)


The Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Tromsø is the most northerly Catholic church in the world. There is no bombast in it, all the design is rather modest, and it is this simplicity that attracts visitors from abroad and believers of different nationalities.

History of the Cathedral

The church dates from the middle of the XIX century. In 1861 the cathedral was first opened to visitors. At first it was assumed that the church would become the residence of the bishop of the city, but later the plans changed, and the cathedral became just a parish church. Since the time of construction, the interior of the temple has undergone several changes. During the Second World War, the cathedral housed refugees from Finnmark. In 1867 it had a Catholic school. In mid-May 1969, a fire broke out in Tromsø, which caused serious damage to the church. However, after the incident, it was quickly restored to its former appearance.

One of the most significant events in the history of the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Tromsø is a pastoral visit in June 1989 of the Pope John Paul II. Nowadays the church is very visited by tourists, and its arrival is about 500 Tromsø believers, most of them are Norwegians, Poles and Filipinos.
