The Norwegian city of Oslo is famous for its museums . One of them, the Fram Museum, was created in 1936. All its expositions reveal the history of numerous polar expeditions. There is a museum on the Bugdyoy peninsula, in close proximity to the famous Kon-Tiki museum .
Features of the Museum of Fram
This museum is dedicated to the legendary ship Fram. Its name in translation from Norwegian means "forward". The sailboat was built in 1892 by the order of the famous polar explorer Nansen. He is considered the most durable wooden ship among all ships ever constructed. For three long years his expedition furrowed the waters of the Arctic latitudes and first reached the North Pole. Then on the same ship another researcher, Amundsen, goes to the South Pole.
As historians testify, they created the Fram museum in Oslo in honor of this heroic schooner. The ship itself was placed in a huge hangar-tent. Visitors today can climb the ship to see how the Arctic expedition members lived. Going down into the hold, you can hear the soundtrack of the dog's barking: during the polar expeditions, dogs were kept here, so necessary for survival beyond the Arctic Circle.
Behind the windows of the Fram museum are objects of seafarers' everyday life. You can see the diaries of travelers in which they conducted all their observations during the campaigns. Ship models explain the features of its structure, thanks to which the ship could drift for a long time, compressed by many meters of ice. There are in the museum and stuffed northern animals: polar bear, penguin and others.
How to get to the Fram museum?
The museum is easily accessible from the center of Oslo by shuttle bus. You can buy the so-called Oslo pass - a tourist ticket, which is issued for a day. With him you can go to the museum for free and see its expositions.
