The institution was founded in Kvadraturen in 1993 by the wealthy Norwegian families Astrup and Fernly, from which the name of the museum came. In 2012, the institution was moved to a new building, built by the famous architectural company Building Workshop, led by renowned specialist Renzo Piano and Narud Stokke Wiig.

The Astrup-Fernli Museum is represented by three separate buildings, a combined glass roof and connected by bridges, thrown over the water. In one of the buildings are offices, and they also host art exhibitions. In other rooms are directly exhibition halls.

A distinctive element of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Oslo is its roof. It has a double curved shape and emphasizes the interaction of the cultural purpose of the structure. The buildings are made in the form of wooden laminated beams, which support steel thin columns. This building is considered the most outstanding in its architecture on the entire planet.

The collection in the Astrup-Fernly Museum acquaints its visitors with the trends in the development of art over the past 60 years. In one of the halls is the heaviest and largest bookshelf on the planet. It is made of steel and lead, and its weight is 32 tons. The exhibit is called "High Priestess", and its author is Anselm Kiefer.

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Norway works from Tuesday to Friday from 11:00 am until 5 pm, on Thursday until 19:00, and on weekends from 12:00 to 17:00. Admission price for adults is about $ 12, for pensioners - $ 9, for students - $ 7, and children under 18 - free.
