Chair in newborns

Newly-mouthed parents with interest and anxiety look at the diaper of the beloved. Indeed, its contents can tell a lot about the digestive system of the newborn. It is important for every mother to know what a normal chair the newborn should be in order to detect the pathology in time and take action.

Newborn's chair: norm

While the baby is growing and developing in the maternal tummy, he gets all the necessary substances through the umbilical cord. At the same time, his gastrointestinal tract does not work. But the fruit performs swallowing movements, sucks fingers, and into its mouth, and then into the stomach and intestines, gets amniotic fluid, villi, skin scales. And the first chair of the newborn is dark green, almost black with a consistency of plasticine, a bit slimy. It is called meconium and is the norm.

Later on the third or fourth day, after applying to the chest, feces have a transitional character: they still contain the remains of meconium, partially overcooked colostrum and milk. The baby's chair has a mushy consistency with a brownish-green color.

With the advent of mature milk (after 7-10 days), the baby's feces change. They become yellowish and have a consistency of cottage cheese. Even the smell of a newborn's stool is sour, like cottage cheese. In such feces there should be no lumps, mucus, greens. Mom needs to pay attention to the number of times a newborn patient has a chair a day. The frequency of bowel movements can vary from one to six to eight times - almost during or after each feeding. The main thing is that the baby's chair was daily. The absence of feces at least a day is regarded as constipation.

A little different is the case with a newborn's chair with artificial feeding. Sometimes the feces of an artificial baby are similar to that of a baby. But most often the stool has a thicker consistency, a slightly putrid smell and a dark brown color. In this case, it is normal to empty the bowel once a day.

Newborn's chair: possible problems

Often a newborn does not have a "right chair", and the feces have a greenish color. "Greenery" may indicate several problems. Firstly, this color of the stool is when malnutrition is malnourished when the mother does not have enough milk. Secondly, green feces occurs with inflammation of the intestinal mucosa, which can be caused by fetal hypoxia, malnutrition of the nursing mother, dysbiosis. It is possible to have a stool in a newborn with mucus. Slime most often indicates the presence of pathogens in the intestine, and sometimes it is present if the child has a runny nose or bronchitis.

The appearance of white lumps in the newborn's chair does not in itself indicate a pathology, if the crumb feels well and steadily gaining weight. This indicates that the body receives a surplus of nutrients. This happens when the mother very often puts the baby to the chest. But if the baby lags behind in development, grows poorly and gains weight, white lumps in the stool show that the digestive glands do not produce enough enzymes, due to which the food is digested.

A watery stool in a newborn indicates lactose deficiency. This is the name of a condition in which the digestion of milk sugar - lactose - is broken. This phenomenon occurs if the woman's milk contains an excessive amount of lactose. The reason for the watery stool of the baby is also an inadequate digestion of the enzyme lactase, which breaks down the milk sugar.

Quite often, mothers complain of a thick stool in the newborn that occurs with constipation. Constipation is a consequence of impaired intestinal motility or malnutrition of the nursing mother. Too hard feces damage the walls of the rectum and lead to the appearance of blood in the stool of the newborn. In case of severe bleeding, immediately call an ambulance.

For any deviation in the stool of the baby, the mother should be informed to the pediatrician.
