Fort Serman


Fort Serman is the former military base of the American army in Panama . It is located in Toro Point, in the Caribbean basin of the Panama Canal , on the west bank of the canal opposite the Colon Fort.

Earlier, Fort was the main defensive base of the Caribbean sector of the Panama Canal. In addition, he was an important center for training the US military. His neighbor from the Pacific was Fort Amador (Fort Amador). Both were handed over to the Panamanian leadership in 1999.

What is interesting about the fort?

Simultaneously with the construction of the Panama Canal, defensive points and military bases were built: the main function of the latter was to protect against the attack of infantry. Fort Serman was the main Caribbean military base. Its construction began in January 1912, and it was named after the American General Sherman (Shermana). Previously, the fort area covered 94 square meters. km, while part of its land was covered with impassable jungle. On the developed part there were barracks, a small airstrip and a rest zone.

In 1941 on Fort Serman the first early warning radar SCR-270 was installed. And in 1951, they created a military training center Training Center Operations for training American and Allied troops in Central America. Every year up to 9,000 soldiers are trained here.
