The King's Bridge

In the heart of the huge metropolis of Panama there is a small corner of it, impregnated with the spirit of centuries-old history - Casco Viejo . Among the attractions of this area stands out a whole complex, striking remnants of its former grandeur and grandeur. It's about the so-called Casas Reales, also known as the "Royal Chambers". Corresponding to the proper status, in this once majestic corner leads the Royal Road, which crosses another monument of antiquity - Puente del Rey, known as the King's Bridge. We will talk about it in this article.

What is interesting about the bridge?

The King's Bridge was erected between 1619 and 1634, and laid across the Abajo River. The exact year of the completion of construction is for sure unknown, therefore all the dates are only the assumptions of knowledgeable people who claim that the construction lasted a very long time. Historically proven facts indicate that the bridge was built on the site of a wooden trail, which was later reinforced with bricks and stones, giving it a contoured arch shape. By the way, this very arc at that time was the first of its kind among the bridges of Panama.

The main value of this bridge is in its masonry, which is an excellent addition to the architectural appearance of the city, executed in a typical colonial style. The width of the arc is about 10 m, and the bridge - just over 6 m. The choice of stones for decoration looks quite neat, and each of them seems to lie in its place.

However, modernity is not as rosy as we can imagine. Due to the neglect of the historical complex and the huge amount of debris in the area, the King's Bridge is in critical condition. The city authorities are taking measures to strengthen the framework and preserve this monument of colonial architecture, but a full restoration requires considerable investments.

However, the tourists there the entrance is still available. Therefore, do not lose the opportunity to walk through one of the oldest bridges of Panama , introducing yourself to an aristocratic nobility among the Spanish colonialists.
