Plaza de la Catedral

Independence Square, or Plaza de la Catedral, is the main square and one of the most visited attractions in the historic Panamanian region of Casco Viejo . It is here that the day of liberation from the protectorate of Spain and Colombia is celebrated, and the square itself is surrounded by monuments to the heroes of Panama .

General information

The Plaza de la Catedral was established in 1878, but only in the 1980s was completely transformed to the kind that now appears before every visitor - a tourist and a local.

The center of the square is decorated with a gazebo, where musicians play in the evenings, and therefore often you can see dancing couples near it. Around the Plaza de la Catedral there are several historical buildings. This is the Presidential Palace (Palacio Municipal), the Museum of the Canal Museum, the National Theater and the Central Hotel, located in a building that was built in 1874.

In the summer heat in the Plaza de la Catedral, it is pleasant to relax in the shade of tabebuya (ant tree), which from July to September is decorated with pink and yellow flowers. And during the Panamanian summer weekend, a fair of food products and creations of local craftsmen is held on the square.

How to get to the square?

The Plaza de la Catedral is surrounded on four sides by Central avenue, by the Instituto Eastmeno street and the Salle 5a Oste. Not far from it is located no less famous Panamanian landmark - the House of Gongora .
