Levomekol ointment - indications for use

Levomekol is a drug for external use with antibacterial, regenerating and anti-inflammatory action. The product is available as a white ointment, sometimes yellowish in metal tubes (40 g) or cans (100 g).

Composition and therapeutic effect of Levomecol ointment

Levomekol is a combined medicinal product, which consists of two active ingredients:

  1. Chloramphenicol. Antibiotic of a wide spectrum. Effective against most gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, Escherichia coli, spirochetes, chlamydia.
  2. Methyluracil. Immunostimulating agent with anti-inflammatory properties, also accelerating the process of cellular regeneration.
  3. As auxiliary substances in the ointment are polyethylene (400 and 1500), which contribute to the uniform application of the ointment and its penetration into tissues.

Levomekol has a predominantly local effect (absorption into the blood is extremely low) and can be used regardless of the presence of pus and the number of pathogens. The therapeutic effect persists 20-24 hours after application of the drug.

Indications for the use of Levomecol ointment

The drug is characterized by pronounced antimicrobial activity, it helps to reduce inflammation, swelling, cleansing of inflamed wounds from pus and rapid healing of tissues.

In addition, the ointment is used as a preventive agent to accelerate healing and prevent infection of wounds, cuts and post-operative sutures (including vaginal).

Eczema is not included in the list of indications for the use of Levomecol ointments. But in the presence of infection or in the microbial nature of the disease, the doctor can prescribe Levomecol and in the treatment of eczema.

Levomekol's use for burns

The drug is used to prevent infection and accelerate healing, usually in the event that burn blisters burst, after the damaged area is rinsed with cold water and the primary treatment is performed. The ointment is applied to the gauze sterile dressing, which is applied to the burn surface and changes 1-2 times a day. The course of treatment can last from 5 to 12 days.

Levomekol's use for wounds

With an open wound surface, as in the case of burns, the ointment is applied under the bandage. With narrow deep wounds and deep purulent lesions, Levomekol is recommended to be injected into the cavity with the help of drainage or a syringe. With extensive damage, the treatment period should not exceed 5-7 days, as with longer use the drug may negatively affect intact cells.

To prevent infection, the most effective use of Levomechol in the first 4 days after receiving a wound.
