Russian-Byzantine style

The Russian-Byzantine or Neo-Russian style was mainly used in architecture: the construction of churches and large state buildings. KA Ton first published church construction projects in this style in 1838.

We can distinguish the following features of the Russian-Byzantine style:

Prior to the Byzantine influence on Russian culture have already tried to create their own unique national style. He was called Russian, appeared simultaneously with the advent of eclecticism in the world. Russian style copied the architecture of the pre-Petrine period, but it turned out that this copy is not a very good result. The interior was dry and boring.

Everything changed at the end of the nineteenth century. The Russian-Byzantine style of the interior was made based on ancient folk art. He no longer relied on official architecture, but was freer, more artistic.

The Russian-Byzantine style presupposes the presence of the following features:

  1. The application of Byzantine ornamentation, which was still applied to ancient Byzantine books.
  2. The appearance in the interior of the Russian-Byzantine style of such features of the Russian style as the use of natural materials or their decorative substitutes.
  3. A large number of wooden elements. Tables are usually made of natural wood.
  4. Wall decorative panels under the tree are used.
  5. The presence in the interior of forged elements: chandeliers, floor shelves for flowers .
  6. Relevant are semicircular arches and arched openings, massive columns and other architectural elements.
  7. The furniture is massive, but elegant.
