Sverresborg

In the central part of Norway , 1 km from the Trondheim Fjord, the castle of Sverresborg is located. It is a kind of evidence of the rise and fall of the self-proclaimed Norwegian king Sverre Sigurdsson. Eight centuries later, there were only ruins left of the castle, around which the open-air museum Trendelag was defeated.

History of the construction of the castle of Sverresborg

This castle is the first in the country citadel, built of stone. In the winter of 1182 a stone was used for its construction, which was mined in a local quarry. In the construction site, city bricklayers participated, thanks to which all the work was completed already in 1183. The first five years for Sverresborg were peaceful, because at that time it was used only as a royal residence.

In 1188, taking advantage of the absence of the king and his army, rebels attacked the castle. They burnt a wooden fortress, and the masonry itself turned into ruins. By 1197, Sverresborg was restored and stood until 1263, withstood numerous sieges, encroachments and attacks by enemies. But then in Norway there was a civil war. After its completion in 1263, the remaining walls of Sverresborg were used for construction purposes.
