Orthodox church of the Holy Trinity


Evidence of the spiritual heritage of any country are churches and monasteries. In the center of one of the largest cities of Montenegro , Budva, is the functioning church of the Holy Trinity. In the distant 1798 at the request of believers near the Citadel began to erect an Orthodox church. We graduated from it in 6 years, in 1804.

What is interesting about the Holy Trinity Church?

The architecture of the Holy Trinity Church in Budva was created in a typically Byzantine style: white and red stone. These two shades alternate in the masonry of the walls of the building. The horizontal stripes of the two shades end with a tiled roof of red color. On the high bell tower there are three bells. This monumental structure is an exact copy of the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is located in Podgorica .

Behind the outwardly modest appearance lies the rich internal decoration of the church. The high iconostasis, designed in the Baroque style, was created by the talented Greek artist Naum Zetiri. Out of his brush came beautiful icons with biblical themes. Many of his works have remained in their original form to this day. Entrance to the Church of the Holy Trinity is decorated with frescoes with gilding and colorful mosaic. As in many Slavic churches, there are no large windows in the temple: it is lit by lamps and lamps.

During the strongest earthquake in 1979, the temple was half destroyed. However, after the restoration work, this recognized shrine of Budva again receives all parishioners, as well as travelers. Not far from the Church of the Holy Trinity is buried a well-known Budvanian, who lived in the XIX century, an active freedom fighter Stefan Mitrov Lyubish.

How to get to the church of the Holy Trinity?

Since the temple is located in the heart of old Budva , you can get to it on foot. From the bus station to the Old Town, the walk will be 20 minutes. The road by taxi along the same route will cost 5-6 euros.
