The Island of St. Nicholas

One of the most beautiful places in Montenegro is the island of St. Nicholas. Crystal clear sea, forest, excellent beaches, clean air and a small number of people - this is what attracts both locals and guests of the country.

general information

Island of St. Nicholas in Montenegro - a land area of natural origin, located in the Budva Gulf. Another name for the island is Hawaii Montenegro. This name he got thanks to the Hawaii restaurant located here. With the city of Budva, the island of St. Nicholas is connected by a stone mound on one side. During low tides the depth in this place hardly reaches half a meter. The total area of the island is 36 hectares, the length is 2 km.

At present, the island is uninhabited. One part is a closed nature reserve, the second part is a tourist zone with a fairly well-developed infrastructure. Thanks to the ban on visiting the protected area, nature is preserved here in its original form, and the diversity of the animal world is amazing. On the island live such animals as deer, moufflon, hares, and also a lot of insects and birds.

What to see?

The main attraction of the island is the church of St. Nicholas - the patron saint of seamen. The first mention of the religious structure dates from the 16th century, but it is believed that it was built much earlier (in the XI century). Unfortunately, the original building was destroyed by an earthquake in 1979, now a new church was built in its place. There are other constructions on the island of St. Nicholas, but they do not represent either architectural or historical value.

Beach line

The coastline of the island is stretched for 800 m and is conditionally divided into 3 parts:

The main advantage of local beaches is their relative lack of people. For a comfortable holiday on the beach is to buy special shoes. Pebbles on the shore are large, which can cause trouble during travel and bathing. The entrance to the beaches is free, but for sunbeds and umbrellas you will need to pay (approximately from $ 5 to $ 17 for the whole day). If you have planned a budget vacation , then you can sunbathe on your own rug.

If you are hungry, you can look into the local restaurant, which is located near the beach, in the shade of trees. Prices here are an order of magnitude higher than in Budva, so experienced tourists are advised to take food and water with them.

How to get there?

You can get to the island of St. Nicholas in several ways:

From the Slavic beach there are also cruises with a "sea walk" service, which lasts 45 minutes. The cost of round trip plus a walk is about $ 5 per person.
