This place attracted representatives of the authorities from time immemorial. Montenegrin king Nicola I wanted to build a market here and a small promenade. At a time when Montenegro was part of Yugoslavia, its ruler broke the square that bore his name (Alexander I Square). Podgorica was destroyed by massive attacks in 1990. When the city was rebuilt, the central square became known as the Main Square. The current name appeared in 2006. Reconstruction work was led by local engineer-architect Mladen Durovich.
