Daibabe Monastery

In Montenegro, near Podgorica, there is the unique male monastery of Dyababe (Manastir Dajbabe). It belongs to the Orthodox Serbian Church of the Montenegrin-Primorsky Metropolis.

Description of the temple

The founder is the Reverend Simeon Daibab, who in 1897 built a monastery in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary (which translates as "Daibabe"). This happened immediately after the liberation of the capital from the Turkish invaders. The monk chose the place not by chance, because here in 1890 there was a miracle: a shepherd boy named Petko Ivesic was the saint and ordered that a temple be erected on the mountain.

He also told about the relics of the 13th century: liturgical books, church bells, relics and frankincense kept in the nearest caves. Until now, all grottos with Christian treasures have never been found.

In 1896 the shepherd told Hieromonk Simeon about the miracle, the latter believed him and began digging the cave and erecting a temple in it. In 1908, there was built an outbuilding and two belfries.

The Elder himself painted the ceiling and walls of the church, while continuously reading the prayers and holding fasting. He depicted here the faces of saints and religious paintings. Last years he spent in the walls of the shrine and led the life of a hermit.

Daibabe Monastery now

The temple outside looks like an ordinary church, but it only has a facade that is attached to the rock. Inside there is an ancient cave with ancient icons. It has the shape of a cross thanks to ramifications. The total width of the shrine is only 2.5 m, and the length is 21.5 m. The temple is divided into 3 canals:

In the monastery you can touch the wonderworking relics of the Elder, still there is the icon of the Virgin from Jerusalem, numerous frescoes, books and a source of healing water.

The monastery includes the Church of the Assumption of the Mother of God (Simeon called it the underground home of the Heavenly Queen). The surface above the grotto is covered with shingles so that water does not get into it. The doorway of the temple has a height of 1.70 m. Such dimensions were made of great reverence for the shrine, so that the incoming bowed at the entrance.

Monastery Daibabe in Montenegro is considered the center of the spiritual life of the country. Here come pilgrims from all over the world to pray in the walls of the temple. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that it is a joint creation of nature and man.
