One of the most interesting museums of Gotland is dedicated to art on this island and offers to visit a vast exposition, which includes artistic masterpieces from the beginning of the XIX century to our days. The Gotland Art Museum is located in the town of Visby in Sweden .
History of creation
The Art Museum on the island of Gotland was opened in 1988 in the building of a former elementary school and then a gymnasium at St. Gansgatan. The author of the project was the architect K. Bergman. Most exhibits to the museum were donated by private individuals, the rest were purchased by the Gotland Art Association.
What is interesting about the Gotland Art Museum?
Outwardly, the building of the museum looks rather modest, perhaps the only decoration of it is a mosaic with a shepherdess and sheep. But inside, despite the small size of the museum, you will find an amazing treasure. The collection of the Gotland Museum of Art includes works of art and handicrafts created on the island, from the 1800s to the present. You will not just dive into the world of the Vikings and learn about life in Gotland in different epochs, but you will also be able to participate in the interactive program, try on chain mail and hold the sword.
The exhibition presents a large number of landscapes, portraits, engravings and sculptures. All information on the exhibits is duplicated in Swedish and English. Pay attention to:
- a wonderful selection of landscapes of the city of Visby;
- a large collection of archaeological finds , including ancient stones with thousands of years old drawings, bronze-century sculptures, wooden sculptures from local churches, coins, treasures, gold and silver ornaments and evidence of the Battle of Visby;
- 2 permanent exhibitions of the museum , bearing the name "Dreams of Gotland" and "Tira Lundgren";
- interactive exhibits for children on the top floor.
In addition, the Art Museum of Gotland regularly hosts temporary exhibitions, which demonstrate novelties and modern trends in the direction of art, design and craft.
The museum has a gift shop. In it you can see a huge assortment of goods, ranging from very inexpensive notebooks, spectacle cases and stands under the hot and finishing with luxurious albums on art and reproductions of paintings from the Gotland Museum of Art. How to get there?
Since the Visby Art Museum is on the island, you will need to take advantage of air travel on domestic lines in Sweden or by water transport to visit it. There are several options for the route to Gotland:

- Ferry from Oskarshamn. Travel conditions (cost and duration of the route) almost do not differ from the previous version. But in this case, tickets must be booked in advance on the website for tourism in Gotland.
- The plane is Stockholm-Visby. From the Swedish capital, planes to Visby fly from two airports - Arlanda and Bromma . A direct flight takes only 45 minutes, and a return ticket costs $ 135. For travelers without a car this is the fastest and most comfortable option.
