Torshavn Cathedral

Torshavn Cathedral - the cathedral of the Evangelical Lutheran National Church of the Faroe Islands , is the main attraction of the city. More than twenty years ago, it was declared the residence for the Bishop of the Faroe Islands .

What should I look for?

  1. The altar . It is installed on the northern wall of the nave with the picture of the Last Supper (in the central section) and with the inscription: "A gift for the church from the former merchant of the Faroe Islands for church ordinances and glorifications of God. 1647 "(in the upper section). Painting of the artist Peter Candida. The size is 100x100 cm.
  2. The bell . Bought from the ship Norverzhsky Lion in 1708. It is decorated with floral ornament in the form of fan-shaped palm leaves. Also on it there is a monogram of the East India Company, which belonged to the ship. The bell is 30 cm high, and the diameter of the outer rim is 42 cm.
  3. The choir . Its structure was rebuilt several times and expanded, which is why the choir is considerably pushed out of the building. Now it has 44 benches for the parishioners, which is quite a lot for this size of the church, on each bench there are special shelves for the Bibles - they can be read freely.
  4. The Crucifixion . On the table of the altar is a crucifix made of silver of 1713, next to it there is a silver cup with wine symbolizing the blood of Christ.
  5. The font . One of the important ritual parts of the temple, which has survived since 1601. On a wooden stand of white color there is a cup-shaped golden font with a diameter of 50 cm, and there is a silver decanter for washing in it. The font is located between the benches for the parishioners and the altar.
  6. Organ . It is an integral part of the temple, without it no service passes.
