Antwerp Zoo


In the central part of the Belgian town of Antwerp is one of the oldest zoos on the planet. Its history began in 1843, when, on the initiative of the local zoologist Jacques Kets, a small zoo was opened, in which rare animals lived here. Over the course of time, the territory of the reserve has increased almost 10-fold, and its inhabitants are over five thousand animals belonging to 770 species. It is important to know that the Antwerp Zoo in Belgium is known not only for its rich collection of animals, but also for the buildings in which they live, since most of them are considered historical monuments that appeared in the middle of the XIX century.

Structure of the zoo

The Antwerp Zoo is divided into thematic expositions:

  1. Hippo - is a copy of the swamp and sheltered hippos, curly pelicans, Malay tapirs.
  2. There are elephants, giraffes, anaa in the premises of Khati Mahal.
  3. Animals living in harsh conditions are located in the theme rooms "Country of frost."
  4. The burloga has become a haven for noses and spectacle bears.
  5. Animals, leading nightlife, are housed in the exposition "Nokturama". These are tubercles, two-toed sloths, and wet-nosed primates.
  6. "The Temple of the Moors" is surrounded by numerous okapi.
  7. African buffaloes and zebras live in premises called "Savannah".
  8. In the "House of Primates" noisy gorillas, mandrills, chimpanzees, capuchins, gibbons.
  9. Exposition "Winter Garden" is a huge botanical garden, in which besides interesting plants live invertebrates.

In addition to thematic exhibitions in the Antwerp zoo, there is a giant aquarium, facilities in which amphibians and reptiles, predatory birds, representatives of the cat family, goats and other animals live.

Zoo of the city of Antwerp is not only an institution in which rare animals are shown to the public, there are interesting cultural and scientific programs that are designed to preserve the fauna of the planet. The complex of the Antwerp Zoo in Belgium consists of a dolphinarium, a reserve of De Cegge, a planetarium. In addition, a concert hall is organized on the territory of the zoo, which is used for various events, including those involving its inhabitants.

You can reach the sights by tram lines Nos. 2, 6, 9, 15, following the Antwerpen Premetrostation Diamant, a 15-minute walk away. If you want, you can take a walk or take a private taxi.

Visit the Antwerp Zoo can be daily from 10:00 to 16:45 hours in the winter and up to 19:00 hours in the summer. Holders of club cards of the Antwerp zoo have two hours in reserve, as they are allowed to come earlier, and leave later than the rest of the visitors.
