Borgj in-Nadur


On the island of Malta you can find a lot of interesting, fascinating places, one of them - the archaeological monument of Bordj in Nadur. The second name is Fortress on a hill. It is located near the town of Birzebbuga, it can be said that almost at the most southeastern point of the state. This landmark is the ruins of a megalithic temple , abandoned in 500 BC. e., and the remains of the village of the Bronze Age. The place is somewhat similar to the English Stonehenge, but it's diametrically opposite buildings. Borj in-Nadur was listed as an archaeological site in 1925 and is of great importance for the history of Malta.

History of constructions

The temple was built around 2500 BC. e. During the Bronze Age, the inhabitants of the developing settlement took possession of its territory and its surroundings. The temple was converted into living quarters. Such conclusions were made in the 16th century by the French clergyman John Quentin. He considered that these were the ruins of the sanctuary of Hercules.

Later, in the 19-20th centuries, excavations continued and assumptions arose that the temple was Punic in origin. At the place where people inhabited the archaeologists found remains of dishes of Mycenaean origin, which indicates the contact between the Maltese and Aegean civilizations. However, over time, values ​​are increasingly destroyed and turned into sand.

Architecture Borj in-Nadur

On the territory you will not see the usual for later periods of architectural decorations on the structure. Survived an unusual foundation of a temple measuring 16x28 meters, which is made in the form of a trefoil (not very high, about 50 cm). Until now, there has been a place where there was a central entrance - it is marked by two blocks. Not far from the entrance you can see a covered building, but its top is already divided into three parts.

Near the church there is a cemetery. From the settlement remained a fortress wall 4.5 meters high and 1.5 meters thick, as well as the remains of the D-shaped bastion. The wall is a very interesting structure, built of stone blocks by the method of dry masonry, stone pegs are laid between them, which ensures its durability. In addition, to this day preserved stone fortifications in the form of a semicircle, 18 and 60 meters in perimeter.

Since Borj in-Nadur is located in close proximity to the sea, you can stroll along the coast and enjoy the most beautiful views. Also in 300 meters there is St. George's Park, on the opposite side of the park there is Ghar-Dalam , or "dark cave" - ​​a place where several layers of bone remains were found of extinct animals during the last glacier, as well as traces of the stay in Malta of the first rights.
