The people of the Owambo tribe who spoke the Khoisan language began to settle the territory of this protected area. The name of the reserve from their language translates as "a large white space". Later, for the lands around Lake Etosha, an inter-tribal war began, as a result of which Ovambo people were driven from this territory. When the Europeans arrived here, it began to be used as agricultural land.

The official foundation date for Etosha is 1907, and the status of the national park was given to him only in 1958. His creation helped to save rare and endangered species of animals, but still the buffaloes and wild dogs died out here in the middle of the 20th century. The supervisors of the Etosha reserve have to constantly struggle with poachers and slaughterhouses, literally beating off hundreds and thousands of large animals (plain zebras, mountain zebras, elephants).
