Kora National Park

Traveling to Kenya provides a unique opportunity to get to know the nature of the African continent and to imbue with the culture and customs of the local people. Here, at almost every step, there are natural parks and reserves, one of which is the Kora National Park.

History of the National Park

In 1973, the territory of the Kora Park was approved as a nature reserve. As a national park, Kora has been known since 1989. Its name is strongly associated with the name of the famous nature defender George Adams. This scientist spent 20 years in the park, engaged in the treatment and rehabilitation of local predators. George Adams, along with his assistant Tony Fitzjon, fought against poaching, and also sought to ensure that the Kora reserve was given the status of a national park, which happened in 1898 after George Adam was killed by poachers.

Thanks to the active work of scientists and the environmental service, active work has been carried out in the park from 2009 to the present:

More recently, George Adams' long-standing dream was realized - a bridge was built across the Tana River, which connects the Kora National Park with the Meru Park . In the near future, it is planned to transport some animals from those places of Kenya , where their population has sharply increased.

The biodiversity of the park

The territory of the Kora National Park has an area of 1788 square meters. km. It is located along the Tana River at an altitude of 290 to 490 meters above sea level. The main part of the park is represented in the form of plains and shrouds, other areas pass into the mountainous terrain. In the park there are island mountains, called inselbergs. The highest mountain is Mansumbi, whose height reaches 488 meters.

Through the territory of the Kora National Park, several seasonal rivers flow, which disappear completely during the dry season, and during the rainy season they fill the dried up fields and beaches with life.

The reserve is not rich in vegetation. Here you can find only shrub acacia, growing along the banks of the Tana River, as well as doom-palm trees and poplar trees. As for the fauna of the park, it pleases its diversity. Here you can meet and herbivores, and predators, and scavengers. Mainly:
