Mkomazi is the youngest national park in Tanzania , which received this status in 2008. Previously, it was only a hunting reserve. The name of the park is translated from the language of the African tribe to the couple as "a spoonful of water".
First of all, we should note the fact that Mkomazi, located on the border with Kenya, is not the most comfortable park for tourists. There are no comfortable hotels, and you can only stop at the campsite. Therefore, many choose for safari other parks - for example, the Serengeti in Tanzania . However, Mkomazi has its own charm: unique landscapes along with an abundance of rare species of animals, despite everything, attract nature lovers here. In addition, in this park there are no crowds of tourists, as in the more popular Arusha or Ruach .
Nature of Mkomazi Park
The eastern part of the park is a plain, while in the north-west dominated by a hilly relief. The highest points of Mkomazi are Kinindo (1620 m) and Maji Kununua (1594 m). The climate of this area is rather dry due to the Usambara mountains, which delay the precipitation. If you come to the park in the dry season, you will be able to see empty reservoirs that fill with water only during the rainy season.
The fauna of Mkomazi National Park is very interesting from the point of view of safari. Such rare animals live here, as are the pomegranates, herenoks, small kudu, African wild dogs. Large herds of elephants migrate between the parks of Mkomazi and Tsavo. Also, you will certainly see here the antelope canna and baza, giraffe gazelle, bobala and other exotic wildlife. The territory of the park is inhabited by 405 species of birds.
Separately, it should be said about the black rhinos that were brought here in 1990 and since then are kept in a special fenced area of 45 square meters. km. You can see these animals in the central part of the park, closer to the north.
The flora of the park is 70% green meadows, which turn into real bogs during the rainy season . That is why it is not recommended for tourists to come to Mkomazi at this time. The best time for walks in this Tanzanian park is from June to September.
