The citadel of King Mošešo

The citadel of King Moshosho is the most famous historical landmark , which every tourist should see, who visited the small lost country of Lesotho in South Africa. It is located 20 km from the city of Maseru , the capital of the state.

The fortress was built at the beginning of the 19th century on the Taba-Bosiu mountain plateau , which was formed by a 120-meter protrusion, and served as a reliable defense against enemies. At present, only ruins and fragments of the tower remain, as well as the burial place of royal people, but the interesting and rich history of the battle of the African people for freedom and independence attracts tourists here.

A bit of history

At the end of the 17th century the ancestors of the modern people of the basuto began to develop the South African lands. The tribes that lived in the mountains of Maloti and in the valley of the Caledon River were united by a leader, a small tribe of Suto - Moshosho, to master new territories. So the Kingdom of Lesotho was originally founded. But the basuto began to be subjected to constant attacks first hostile neighboring clans, then Boers, and then the British. In an unequal struggle, the basuto bravely fought for their freedom.

The main defensive fortress was the citadel of King Moshosho. She became famous for the fact that for many years the attacks of the colonialists never gave up and staunchly defended themselves. This was possible due to the convenient geographical location, the rational use of benefits (in the bowels of the earth under the fortress was discovered the source of water) and the courage of the soldiers. In July 1824, the fortress was still conquered, but this is not the end of the battles for the struggle for independence.
