What is interesting about the Church of Christ in Windhoek?

The building, built in European style on African soil, looks quite unusual and impressive. But in the years of its erection the influence of the German colonists was very significant in all spheres of life in this part of Africa. The king of Germany and Prussia, William II, supervised the project, and materials for construction were imported from different countries:

  1. The spire of the church, 24 meters high, was erected from profiled sheets of metal imported from Germany, as well as the clock that adorns the tower.
  2. A portal of beautiful marble came from faraway Italy.
  3. The main church image, located behind the throne, is a copy of the work of Rubens.
  4. The bronze bells cast in Austria engraved inscriptions in Latin, sounding like "Peace on Earth" and "Glory to the Most High."
  5. The only material that was used for construction was a sandstone, born of African soil. From it were erected the walls of the church. To simplify the delivery of material to the construction site, a small railway branch was built to the hill on which the foundation of the future cathedral was laid.
