Facade board

To turn a standard brick building into a stylish modern structure, many owners go to radical measures, using for finishing the facade a variety of panel materials. But although plastic siding is relatively inexpensive, it is not always possible to get an expensive and presentable look. Practically always good results give the use of a wooden facade board (planken), which is produced from different types of wood. By the way, it can be purchased, both for decoration of the facade, and for many internal works.

What is a planken?

This type of material is produced from a planed board with the selected groove. It can have straight, rounded or bevelled edges, which affects the way of installation. Usually the length of the planken is 4 m, with a thickness of 16-21 mm and a width of 120-145 mm. However, if the customer comes up with the manufacturer of the facade board in price, then they will make an individual lot for the given sizes. Special technology of heat treatment makes it possible to increase the resistance of wood to fungi and bad weather, to change the coloring of the finishing material in the right direction. This facade does not warp and will not crack with time.

Advantages of using a decorative facade board:

  1. Despite its natural origin, planken is longevous and resistant to many negative weather factors.
  2. Wood has always been well combined with different finishing materials, so the facade board always looks great next to the brickwork , stone, metal, decorative forged elements.
  3. The hosts are able to mount a ventilated facade, which is very simple to install.
  4. The facade board is a good heat insulator and has quite normal waterproofing properties. It does not allow moisture to condense and the life of thermal insulation materials is significantly increased.
  5. Many people say that in the buildings finished with planken, the internal climate is very favorable.

What types of wood are used for the production of a facade board?

Inexpensive and quite suitable for interior decoration is pine. Note that such material produces a pleasant coniferous aroma, which is very beneficial for the microclimate of the house. The facade board made of larch is resistant to decay and is practically not exposed to insects. This species of wood tolerates high humidity, which allows it to retain its excellent appearance for a long time. It is believed that the optimum breed for the production of planken is the Canadian cedar, which has excellent performance properties and an extremely pleasant color. From domestic breeds such breeds as ash and oak, possessing a wonderful texture is used. In addition, there is a facade board made of exotic wood - kumaru, Burmese teak, ipe. Oil soaked in overseas breeds is expensive, but resistant to rot.

Planken from wood-polymer material

The natural tree now becomes more expensive and the appearance of a terraced facade board made of artificial components does not surprise anyone. It is produced from wood (up to 70%), polymers and a variety of chemical additives that improve performance. By the way, in addition to coniferous species and larch, some companies even add sunflower and rice husks to their products. Of course, the environmental friendliness of such a planken is very low and in this matter it is impossible to compare it with a natural painted or varnished facade board. But this kind of material has a lot of color solutions, very durable, not bad tolerates temperature changes and a damp environment.
