Halyazion of the lower eyelid

Halyazion is a chronic disease that manifests itself in the proliferative inflammation of the edge of the eyelid (lower or upper) around the meibomian gland and cartilage.

In translation from the Greek language, "halyazion" is translated as a "knot" or "hailstones", and this partly reflects the external manifestation of the halazion in the form of a dense formation the size of a pea.

Barley or haljazion?

Disease halyazion is often confused with barley, not only because of external similarity, but also because of the onset of the disease: with haljazione, as with barley, the patient feels burning, reddening on the eyelid next to the eyelashes, and gradually there is a swelling with rounded features and elevation.

Disease haljazion refers to tumor-like, it occurs due to blockage of the sebaceous gland, as well as its swelling, while barley occurs only because of bacteria - staphylococci or streptococci.

Another difference between chalazion and barley is the location of inflammation. In every century there are about 50-70 meibomian glands, which are located just behind the lashes under the eyelids. They help to keep the eye hydrated, preventing the evaporation of tears. It is in the place of their location is formed haljazion - a few centimeters up (in the upper eyelid) or a few centimeters down (in the lower eyelid) from the eyelashes. Barley, as a rule, occurs directly on the line of the eyelashes.

The difference between barley and chalazion is more pronounced on the 2nd day from the onset of the disease: with haljazione, no pain sensations are present, while barley causes a lot of trouble precisely because of soreness.

Gradually the barley can be transformed into haljazion if it is not cured.

Symptoms of the halachion of the lower eyelid

So, we have already found out that haljazion in the beginning arises as well as barley: in the region of the century burning sensation, redness and swelling are felt. These symptoms disappear within the next two days, but on the site of the lesion a round swelling is formed, which grows and does not cause painful sensations. Her growth continues for 7 days, and she can put pressure on the eyeball, disrupting her vision. On the reverse side of the eyelid, a grayish or red spot can be observed.

The causes of the halachion of the lower eyelid

The true cause of haljazion is not clear: there are suggestions that bacteria can clog the glands or tumor processes.

Treatment of the halachion of the lower eyelid

When haljazion began to form within the lower eyelid, then one can begin treatment. However, it should be noted that in some cases, haljazion does not require any treatment and passes on its own, if the symptoms are not present.

Home Treatment

So, in the first hour since the burning sensation began, try to apply hot compresses. They will help if the halachion is caused by bacteria. Means for creating hot compresses can be boiled eggs, which are wrapped in a handkerchief and applied to the eye, and specially prepared bags of salt, heated in the oven, as well as iron-ironed clean pieces of tissue. At the onset of the disease, you need to act quickly, because heating is prohibited when the disease has already formed.

Massage with warm hands will also help prevent the development of haljazion.

Treatment with medicines

As medicines, drops from inflammation based on corticosteroids or antibiotics can be used, as well as a yellow mercury ointment that is applied to the skin.

Removal of the halalion of the lower eyelid

Operation of the lower eyelid with chalasia is necessary in the event that a large cavity with the contents is formed. Also, surgical intervention is indicated in case of relapses or when halalion interferes with normal vision. It is performed by scraping under local anesthesia.
