Historical Museum (Bern)

The city of Bern at first glance seems a guest from the past, given the ancient architecture of buildings and the abundance of really valuable attractions , including the Historical Museum.

History of the museum

In the center of the capital of Switzerland is the Helvetiaplatz square, in 1894 it was erected today by the existing Historical Museum. For the project the sculptor André Lambert was responsible and the museum was built in the style of "eclecticism". It's an interesting fact that originally it was planned to establish the Swiss National Museum, but in the end it was located in Zurich .

What to see in the museum?

Watch and admire can still not entering the museum, because outside it looks like a real castle, with a tower and other relevant details. The museum contains a collection of at least 250,000 exhibits and a large number divided into 4 sections of the museum: the history of the country and abroad, archeology, ethnography and numismatics. The historical part of the museum has elements of ornaments of churches and temples, corresponding religious attributes, decorative fabric and parts of knightly armor. The part with numismatics includes about 80 thousand ancient coins (from 6th century BC and up to modern operating money), medals, seals and so on. The rarest and oldest exhibit of the archaeological part dates back to the 4th century BC!

Invariably in the museum there is an exposition "The Stone Age, Celts and Romans", which includes original ancient sculptures, exquisite fabric elements, silver treasures and an exhibition titled "Bern and the 20th Century". The museum is not limited to the history of its homeland and has exhibits from various parts of the world - Egypt (artifacts from pyramids and tombs of pharaohs), America (culture of the natives of America), Oceania and Asia (objects of cults and works of art) and even there is a collection of the famous watchmaker Henry Moser.
