Malmö Castle

When it comes to Europe, and especially about Denmark , as an association, castles first come to mind. Majestic structures, protected by a moat, with sharp spiers of towers, once called to defend and save, today they mostly entertain tourists and share with them a piece of their centuries-old history. It would seem that the city of Malmö is one of the four largest megacities of Sweden , and the question of Denmark does not fit in a bit geographically. But what is most interesting is that this territory belonged to the territory of the city. So it turns out that even in Sweden you can see the Danish castles, namely the castle of Malmö.

Historical digression

Malmö Castle, Malmöhus, was laid back in 1434. Then in the 16th century, it underwent significant changes at the whim of Christian III, who then sat on the throne of Denmark. It is this appearance that the attraction has preserved to this day.

At one time, the castle played an important role in protecting trade routes. In addition, he was a royal residence, a barracks for soldiers, and even acted as a prison. Today, here is recreated the classic medieval interior, allowing visitors with a head to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of antiquity and even imagine themselves as part of the royal couple.

Exterior and interior

Malmö Castle is considered to be the oldest Renaissance fortress in Scandinavia. The main features of its architecture are as follows:

  1. It is executed in the Renaissance style with baroque elements.
  2. The territory of the castle is surrounded by a deep moat and a fortified wall.
  3. In the fortress structure there are two surviving weapons towers. In later years, when the military significance of the castle was not so relevant, it was here that the prison cells were located, where they placed particularly dangerous criminals. Today one of the towers remained in the form of a place of confinement, and in the second they recreated an authentic military building. Here you can see the old arsenal and guns, and the level above is the shooting gallery.
  4. In the building of the castle of Malmo, special attention should be paid to the Hall of Nobility. In addition, all the interior spaces are fully furnished with authentic Gothic furniture, and the walls are decorated with old paintings, tapestries and even skins.
  5. Particular attention is also paid to the garden, which is one of the non-profit organizations in Sweden since 1997. It is divided into 8 thematic sections: Hanging Gardens, Rosary, Insect Garden, Japanese Garden and other equally interesting sites.

Modernity

Today in the castle of Malmö there are several thematic museums and galleries. For example, here is collected the largest collection of paintings by Russian masters outside the territory of the Russian Federation.

Within the walls of the castle structures is the Technical Museum, which acquaints visitors with the development of science and engineering in general. The largest exhibit here is the submarine U3, one of the first Swedish submarines. The cost of visiting Malmö Castle for adults is € 5, children € 3.
