Self-determination of personality

The concept of self-determination of a person, first of all, includes a person's ability to defend his point of view or position in situations that require deviation from pre-established rules, especially if the actions expected of him are contrary to his moral and moral principles. In fact, it is about setting priorities in values and if a person is not able to go against the public opinion or established stereotypes, even if they are contrary to his ideas about "black and white", then there is complete or partial lack of moral self-determination of the individual .

Execute can not be pardoned

To make it easier to understand everything, let's consider an example of the well-known phrase "You can not pardon execution." Imagine that you were entrusted to decide the fate of a dangerous criminal, which poses a great threat to society and only on you depends whether he will live on or not. Where do you put a comma? Will you proceed from the fact that the life of any person is sacred or take into account the number of victims of the killer and decide not to put other people at risk by going after the supporters of the death penalty and opponents of life imprisonment, although you yourself hate this idea? Can you overcome your own notions of morality? If yes, then you have problems with the self-determination of the individual, which in essence is one of the forms of interaction between an individual and society.

Strength or weakness?

The psychology of self-determination of an individual is an incredibly complex structure that includes all the processes of personality development and the factors affecting it. Here everything plays a role: both the existing life experience, and the environment in which a person was brought up, and the acquired psychological characteristics. Usually the individual's ability to defend his position is expressed in all three types of self-determination of the individual, namely:

  1. In relation to their professional activities.
  2. In relation to the accepted in the society canons.
  3. In determining the meaning and main goals of one's own life.

Statistics show that if a person has pronounced leadership qualities and does not suffer from an inferiority complex, he usually does not experience any problems with self-determination and self-realization of the individual. But in the case of a person unsure of himself, who was especially often attacked by the environment in childhood and adolescence, the ability to make a choice without looking at the stereotypes existing in the society or on the pressure of other points of view is already being called into question.

In any case, self-determination of personality is not an exclusively subjective characteristic of a single person. It is entirely directed to the outside world, aimed at interaction with society and as a consequence, plays an essential role in determining the vector of its development.
