The paint will fall on the gray hair better if you pre-treat the hair with an oxidizer. This procedure is called "etching". The oxidizer is allowed to dry, and then the paint is applied over it.
Another tricky technique is pre-pigmentation. It is relevant if the graying is uneven. In this case, a gray color is applied to the gray strands, the color of which is darker than the natural color. The dye is allowed to stand for 10 minutes, and then the main paint is applied over all of the hair on top of it.

Ladies of venerable age stylists do not advise dyeing their hair in dark colors, because:
- contrast with facial skin emphasizes wrinkles;
- the contrast with the scalp emphasizes the age-related thinning of the hair;
- Dark tone is much more difficult to lighten if the result does not like it.
