Temple of Varahi

Each city of Nepal in its own way surprises travelers, and the lively and many-sided Pokhara - even more so. One of the mustsee of this tourist place is the temple of Varaha, which will be discussed further.

Location:

There is a sanctuary on a small island in the middle of Lake Pheva . This pond is very popular with foreign guests as the most picturesque and also well located. The island itself is unusual in that it has a shape similar to that of a dragon. Nepalese saw this as a sign of destiny and often called it "Dragon Island." In addition, sometimes the island seems to smoke: people claim that the smoke comes from under the ground, where a huge fire-breathing dragon is imprisoned.

Features of the temple of Varahi

The sanctuary is built in the form of a pagoda. It was erected in honor of the god Vishnu (the supreme Hindu god), or rather, one of his reincarnations - Varaha.

There is a legend that once Vishnu came to the city in the guise of a wanderer. He knocked on all the doors, but only in one house where a poor family lived, he was offered shelter and supper. God became angry and plunged the whole city under the water, creating a lake here. And only one islet, where the house of the kind people who sheltered him stood, remained a land.

The temple of Varaha is very popular among the inhabitants of Pokhara and its environs. Be prepared for the fact that on Saturdays a lot of people gather here, and on great Hindu holidays they perform solemn ceremonies and even sacrifices in the form of animals.

How to get to the temple?

This can only be done on water. On the shores of Lake Pheva, you can rent a boat to get to the island. Rent will cost you 200 Nepalese rupees (about $ 0.4) per hour, provided there is no oarsman and hourly pay. It is also possible to rent a boat for the whole day, in addition to visiting the island of the dragon and the temple of Varaha, enjoy skating on the lake and contemplating its beauty.
