What should parents do if the child is hit hard with his head?
All children tend to fall and hit. By oversight of parents, the baby can fall from the changing table or the parent's bed. A one-year-old child, starting to walk alone, often falls and bangs his head against walls or objects of the environment. Moreover, the entire impact force, in 90% of cases, falls precisely on the head, since the movements of the toddlers are not yet coordinated, and it is difficult for them to group in the fall.
First of all, you need to make sure that this injury is not life threatening. If there is no open wound on the head, and the child is conscious, this is already very good.
The next step is to check if the baby has a concussion. To do this, you need to assess its general condition after hitting your head and make sure that there are no specific symptoms such as:
- loss of consciousness, including short-term (for a few seconds);
- repeated vomiting;
- convulsions;
- drowsiness or, more rarely, insomnia;
- headache;
- loss of appetite;
- sweating, pallor and general weakness.
In infants these signs can be more pronounced, but it is more difficult to interpret them. Instead of vomiting in a small child who has hit his head, there is usually a regurgitation, and drowsiness can be replaced by attacks of screaming or crying. Sometimes, concussion and vascular disorders can be judged if, after the baby has hit his head, his temperature has risen.
So, when you notice a few or at least one of the symptoms described above, your actions should be unambiguous - call an ambulance and go to the hospital urgently. But even in the absence of obvious signs of concussion, it is recommended to consult a doctor and protect yourself from too late diagnosing the head injury and its consequences.
