The Island of Prison

Not far from Zanzibar is a small island called Changuu Private Island Paradise, or simply Chang Island. So it was called by the Arabs, who used the island as a place of shipment. But he is more known under his "unofficial" name - Prison. Translated from English, this word means "prison", and indeed, the name "gifted" to the once built by the English general prison, in which, incidentally, there was never a single prisoner. The name, however, caught on, and today most tourists visiting Tanzania know it precisely under this name.

What to see on the island?

Despite the small size (on the perimeter of the island can be walked around for forty minutes), Prison offers its visitors a lot of interesting. First, there live giant turtles - they can not only watch, but also feed from hand and take pictures. By the way, despite the fact that the size of the turtles is really impressive and immediately reminiscent of the cartoon about the lion cub and turtle, do not let them sit down on their children: the internal organs of turtles can be damaged. The entrance ticket to the "turtle park" costs about $ 5. Note: on the shells of some of them are written numbers. They mean the age of the "bearer of the shell".

Secondly - on the island a beautiful beach with white sand, in which you can often find a starfish. In addition, because the island is coral, there is a very rich underwater coastal world, which you can admire by renting equipment in one of the diving clubs. Also, the island offers deep sea fishing; in the coastal waters catch tuna, barracuda and other fish. And you can just wander around corals - if you stock up on waterproof shoes.

Thirdly, the walk on the island itself is very exciting. Here you can see a large number of a variety of plants and animals, including endemic Zanzibar red monkeys.

And, of course, tourists are attracted by the opportunity to see the very prison that was never used for its intended purpose. However, there is a version that it still some time contained prisoners (and terminally ill) and put medical experiments on them. Today there is a hotel and several cafes in the prison building. So you can easily, after spending half a day on sightseeing of the island, how to eat and relax.

How to get to the island?

From the embankment in Stone Town - the capital of Zanzibar - boats are sent to the island of Prison. The road will cost about 15 US dollars (you should definitely bargain!) And it will take about 15-20 minutes. Pay attention: it is better to choose a boat with a tent, as the sun is very hot and "cuts" the eyes even in the morning. There is another way to get to the island: come on foot at low tide. The journey will take more than two hours - even if you walk fast enough, and such a walk because of the sunshine can not be called pleasant.
